The Foundation Line of Champagne American Paint Horses
"Gold Bonnet" - APHA #7,336
This page is dedicated to the Gold Bonnet line of APHA horses which I personally refer to as the Foundation Line of Champagne American Paint Horses! To my knowledge, the Gold Bonnet line is the only champagne line that can only be traced back to 100% APHA/unregistered pinto stock. (Note: I'm sure somewhere back in history it was passed over from AQHA lines as other champagne lines do)
Gold Bonnet was a gold champagne tobiano mare foaled in 1964. APHA records list her as #7,336 and a palomino tobiano sired by Red Ball Baby a bay stallion, AQHA #32,096, and out of an unregistered gold champagne tobiano mare called Queen originally from the famed Waggoner Ranch in Texas. Gold Bonnet produced one stallion and four mares for APHA registered progeny, one of which was a gold champagne tobiano mare foaled in 1969 by the name JRs Honey Moon.
Additionally, Good Gold Almighty, who is a decendent of Gold Bonnet via JRs Honey Moon, and his progeny were one of three horse families used in scientific research to find and develop a genetic test for the champagne dilution. The other two were Tennessee Walkers. A 2008 Paint Horse Journal publication provides information and history on the champagne gene and specifically references Good Gold Almighty in the "Champagne" article. The linked document is a .pdf.
I am beyond excited to have the chance to own and continue this line of horses that make up a small part of American Paint Horse history. We look forward to crossing this line with proven reining and cowhorse bloodlines to produce some of the best-bred, foundation champagne APHA cowhorses around!
**Disclaimer** The information mentioned here comes from the above linked Paint Horse Journal, APHA Records, and a small amount from the all-breed pedigree web site.
